Course Description This on-line course is based on the Instructional Course Lecture entitled “Articular Cartilage Injury in the Athlete: Treatment Options”. The core materials for this course include 3 cases developed by the faculty, and 20 faculty opinion questions, which covers specific questions related to the case materials. In addition there are literature and a self-assessment sections that will allow you to:
- Review the pathophysiology and diagnosis of chondral injuries to the knee
- Review the current surgical techniques and specific postoperative rehabilitation protocols for chondral injuries, including
- microfracture (MFX)
- osteochondral autograft transplantation (OATS)
- autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI)
- osteochondral allografting (OAL)
- Review the outcomes of these surgical techniques
- Define a treatment algorithm for chondral injuries in the athlete
Program Objectives
After completing this course the participants will be able to:
- Define the pathophysiology and the diagnostic techniques for chondral injuries
- Detail the current surgical techniques for these injuries
- Understand the specific postoperative protocols for these techniques
- Review the results/outcomes of these various techniques
- Define the indications for MFX
- Define the indications for OATS
- Define the indications for ACI
- Define the indications for OAL
- Define a treatment algorithm for chondral lesions with particular emphasis on the athlete's knee
