This presentation will deal with options for reconstructing bone defects in revision total knee arthroplasty and is a product of a symposium presented at the Knee Society meeting in March 2006. The treatment of bone defect is a burning issue in knee replacement surgery because there are unsolved problems in dealing with bone loss in revision knee arthroplasty; namely, unreliable fixation of the implant to bone; difficulty in achieving satisfactory alignment of the implant; and difficulty in achieving stability of the joint and balancing the gaps when there is bone missing. In order to deal with this list of problems, a number of techniques are required. This presentation will give an overview of the techniques and new technologies that are available to deal with these challenges in revision knee arthroplasty.
