The following is a list of related orthopaedic organizations that the Academy and its members regularly interact with.

American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS)

  • Establishes educational standards for orthopaedic surgery residents
  • Evaluates the initial and continuing
  • qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons by offering a voluntary certification examination

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

  • Responsible for reviewing and accrediting graduate medical education in the United States
  • Sponsored by:
    The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
    The American Hospital Association (AHS)
    The American Medical Association (AMA)
    Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
    Council of Medical Specialty Societies (COMSS)

American Orthopaedic Association (AOA)

  • The initial orthopaedic association
  • Who is eligible: Orthopaedic surgeons who have made a significant contribution to the education, research, and practice of orthopaedic surgery
  • Activities:
    Annual Residents Conference
    The International Center for Orthopaedic Education (ICOE)
    ABC Traveling Fellowship

Residence Review Committee for Orthopaedic Surgery (RRC)

  • The working arm of the ACGME that performs individual program reviews and proposes either accreditation, probation, or withdrawal of residency training programs
  • Consists of nine voting members:
    Three (3) appointed by the AAOS
    Three (3) appointed by the ABOS
    Three (3) appointed by the Education Council of the AMA
    Note also that the ABOS executive director is an ex-officio member without voting privileges

State Orthopaedic Societies (SOS)

  • Provide information about state-level issues
  • Represent the orthopaedic profession in state government and regulatory bodies
  • Offer opportunities for involvement and influence in the future of the profession
  • Create liaisons with the AAOS via consensus
