Labral Reconstruction: Iliotibial Autograft Knotless Technique

February 01, 2014

Contributors: Carl Wierks, MD; Carl Wierks, MD

Labral insufficiency of the hip is a cause of pain, instability, and increased joint reaction force. Labral reconstruction improves pain and function in patients with insufficient labral tissue. An arthroscopicsurgical technique demonstrating labral reconstruction of the hip using Iliotibial band autograft (ITB) is demonstrated, and graft harvest, preparation, and implantation are highlighted. The graft is secured using knotless suture anchors, which can help to simplify surgery with placement of the securing sutures through the graft when it is outside of the joint. A microfracture of the femoral head is also shown. Indications and contraindications for this procedure and clinical outcomes are reviewed.
