Chap. 15 Video 4: Pitfalls in ACL Reconstruction

February 05, 2016

Contributors: Darren L. Johnson, MD

This video demonstrates various pitfalls that can occur with ACL reconstruction. One is that a tendon stripper may get caught on a band branching off the tendon, which kinks the main tendon and causes it to be cut short. The next pitfall is patellar fracture resulting from an "overrun" horizontal cut when harvesting a BTB graft. Overzealous use of an osteotome on the patella is also demonstrated and discussed. Improperly positioned tunnels and solutions for fixing them are discussed extensively. Insufficiently large or broken bone plugs are also discussed.
