Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation - Placement and Suturing of Seeded Membrane into Defect

November 01, 2015

Contributors: Andreas H Gomoll, MD

This video demonstrates the final step of the ACI technique for repair of a defect of the medial femoral condyle. The cell seeded collagen membrane has been placed into the defect with the membrane itself seated directly on the bone and the edges everted against the cartilage shoulders. The membrane is now secured in place with resorbable 6.0 suture, in this case, with a running suture. After suturing is complete, the suture line is waterproofed with fibrin glue. Once the fibrin glue has set, the knee is taken through a range of motion to ensure mechanical stability of the graft. Subsequently, the incision can be closed in the standard fashion.
