Chapter 05 Video 1: Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty through the Anterosuperior Approach

May 02, 2016

Contributors: Luke Stanford Austin, MD; Grant E Garrigues, MD; Gerald R Williams Jr, MD

The anterosuperior approach is a safe and effective technique for performing a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The benefits include the ability to work through the rotator cuff defect, preserving any remaining supscapularis attachment, and a direct view of the glenoid face. The pitfalls are related to the difficulties in implanting the glenosphere low and without superior tilt through this approach. For this reason, pre-operative evaluation and proper exposure to achieve correct baseplate position are paramount. In this video, we outline our patient selection criteria and present a detailed surgical technique.
