Chapter 18 Video 1: Total Elbow Arthroplasty in a Rheumatoid Elbow

July 02, 2016

Contributors: Hill Hastings II, MD

This video demonstrates the surgical technique for Discovery Total Elbow Replacement through a "triceps-on or sparing" technique with preservation also of the ulnar collateral ligament, which is applicable to a thinner habitus individual. Through a posterior exposure, the lateral collateral ligament complex is released from the lateral humerus, and the anterior and posterior capsules are excised. This allows for medial dislocation of the elbow, which is hinged upon the intact ulnar collateral ligament. Preparation and implantation of humeral and ulnar components is shown followed by repair of the lateral collateral ligament complex and skin.
