Cruciate-Retaining Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty Without Patellar Resurfacing: Comparing Fixed-Bearing and Mobile-Bearing Implants

March 01, 2020

Contributors: Sehan Chung; Jae-Hoon Chung, MD

This video begins with an introduction on minimally invasive total knee arthroplasty (TKA), discussing the definition, indications, contraindications, and results. The major challenges of cruciate-retaining minimally invasive TKA without patellar resurfacing are introduced, and specific tips are discussed. These tips are based on the experience of the authors, who have performed more than 6,500 minimally invasive TKA procedures in the past 10 years. Surgical techniques for minimally invasive TKA are discussed, and fixed-bearing and mobile-bearing implants are compared. We suggest that three main differences exist between fixed-bearing and mobile-bearing implants for minimally invasive TKA. The authors' series on minimally invasive TKA is discussed. The authors hope this video is helpful for those struggling with the limited exposure associated with minimally invasive TKA.
