Musculoskeletal Biomechanics

A review of the role of biomechanics in orthopaedics includes discussion about the biomechanical properties of musculoskeletal tissue as well as orthopaedic diseases and their treatment. Bone mechanics, implant wear, and tribocorrosion are relevant examples of applications of biomechanics and engineering principles in orthopaedics.

    Person-Centered Care: Communication Skills and Cultural Competence

    Although orthopaedic care is relatively technical, mounting evidence shows that patients value nontechnical skills such as empathy, respect, teamwork, and professionalism as much as or more than technical ability. Person-centered care is a humanistic evidence-based approach that relies on empathy and effective communications skills to improve the quality of care and the patient experience while optimizing resource utilization. Ensuring that this approach to care transcends health literacy as well as linguistic and cultural barriers should be a priority and should remain the focus of quality improvement efforts.

      Shoulder Arthritis

      Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has superior clinical and long-term outcomes in comparison with hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Failure of glenoid components in TSA is related to geometric factors. Reverse arthroplasty can be used to address abnormal glenoid morphology, glenoid bone loss, and revision problems. Propionibacterium acnes is commonly isolated from cultures obtained during revision shoulder surgery.
